Eden Project: Great Geothermal
The Eden Project are pioneering geothermal energy — clean, naturally occurring, sustainable energy from the rock deep underground. The deeper underground we go, the hotter it gets: the temperature at the Earth’s core is as hot as the surface of the sun. In places that experience volcanic or tectonic activity, the earth’s heat is close to the surface, and people have used it for tens of thousands of years. Ancient cultures settled near hot springs and used geothermal heat for bathing, cooking and heating. Geothermal heat was first used to drive a turbine and generate electricity in Italy, nearly 120 years ago. This type of energy is extremely important, as it is heat which is naturally occurring, not artificial. This means that we will not expel any emissions in its usage, as we are not having to create it ourselves, which reduces our carbon output.
